Meta Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit with Kentucky School District

Meta has reached a settlement with Breathitt School District in Kentucky, which had sued the company over the alleged costs of addressing a mental health crisis among students, according to BBC News. The district claimed Meta's social media platforms contributed to these issues. This agreement follows earlier settlements by the same school district with other major social media companies, including TikTok, Snap Inc., and Google's YouTube, as reported by The Hindu. The lawsuit was significant as it was selected as a "bellwether case" out of approximately 1,200 similar cases filed by school districts across the U.S., aiming to test arguments before a jury. The Hindu noted the case was scheduled for trial next month in federal court in Oakland, California. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the case was "resolved amicably," allowing the company to avoid mounting a defense at this particular trial. While this specific settlement applies only to Breathitt County School District, both BBC News and The Hindu indicate that numerous similar cases against social media companies remain set for trial in the near future.
